The Multiple Diagnostic Interface 1 & 2 (MDI/MDI 2) are designed to connect a vehicle to a host PC computer application for data transfer and Electronic Control Unit (ECU) reprogramming. The MDI 1 and MDI 2 (Fig. 15) are configured to communicate with the host computer using the MDI Manager PC application software.
A software update was recently released —as part of a staggered rollout beginning on June 15, 2022 — for the MDI Manager. With the update, the MDI Manager will be split into separate applications: one for the MDI 1 and a second one for the MDI 2. These applications will be installed during the update along with a new launcher.
After the update, there will continue to be one MDI Manager shortcut on the desktop for both MDI’s. However, when launching the new MDI Manager (without an MDI connected via USB), users will need to select the MDI 1 or the MDI 2 in order to launch the appropriate manager. (Fig. 16)

The update will also impact the J2534 Device Explorer in the Service Applications (Techline Connect, GDS2, etc.). It will no longer be possible to view both the MDI 1 and the MDI 2 in the available devices when connecting a device in Techline Connect (TLC). “Change Device” must be selected when the Device Explorer pops up in order to switch between the MDI 1 and MDI 2. (Fig. 17)
Last Software Update for MDI
After the update, the MDI 1 will continue to function as usual. However, this will be the last software update for the MDI 1. Future updates to the MDI 2 firmware/software will not require an update the MDI 1.
Medium-Duty Dealers First
Medium-duty dealerships will receive the update first with additional dealerships being added in the July/August timeframe.
The update will also include MDI 2 support for the J1939 protocol that is required on select Low Cab Forward Medium Duty vehicles.
When the update becomes available to your dealership, the MDI Manager update will begin when logging in to Techline Connect. As a user, full administrative rights are needed to install the update. If encountering issues with the MDI Manager not installing or functioning properly, right click on the TLC icon on the desktop and select “Run as administrator.”

Porsche PIWIS II Universal Image Installation:
If you are restoring the PIWIS image to a laptop,use software like RUFUS to make the restore program ISO file to a bootable USB thumb drive.
If you are restoring to a virtual machine,simply mount the iso on the virtual machine.
If the screen gets stuck at this command prompt,simply close the prompt
Click restore and then click the path button.Select the backup file(adi.file) and click on next.
The program detects the selected backup is a system image,would you like to do a system restore?
Click “Yes”
Make sure this box is checked
Select the drive into which you want to restore the image and click next
Make sure that the “enable universal restore” box is checked,so that the system can boot on your laptop.
If you are restoring the image to a virtual machine,you can leave this option unchecked.

Restore Porsche PIWIS II Universal Image to VM: 1.Create two virtual hard drives – lets say – VHD-A and VHD-B;VHD-A will be the main VHD of your VM into which you are restoring the image. VHD-B is just a temporary VHD to hold the image file for restore 2. Copy the image file (.adi file) into VHD-B 3. Attach both VHD-A and VHD-B to the VM 4. In the VMs CD drive, mount the recovery disc iso 5. Start the VM and boot into the recovery CD 6. Follow the instructions given in the archive to restore the image 7. After image finish restoring, turn off the VM and detach VHD-B and unmount the recovery disc iso from the VM 8. Start the VM – after it finish initializing, install guest additions. 9. Done – you can delete VHD-B from your system
Theoretically this image should be able to restore and boot into any laptop which supports Windows XP (hopefully no BSOD on booting). Also you can restore it to a Virtual Machine
My aim with this image was to create an PIWIS image that anyone can restore and use without any difficulty. This image might be more suited to someone restoring it to a laptop other than a Panasonic CF-30 as I have removed all the Panasonic drivers. You can restore it to a CF-30, just need to reinstall / restore all the drivers
Easiest method to re-install drivers – In the laptop you are planning to restore the image -> If you are already running Win XP in that laptop, use software called “Double Driver” to backup all the drivers. After restoring the PIWIS image, restore the drivers – hardly take 5-10 min for complete driver restore and it’s all one-click operation.

How to Connect 12+8 Adapter:
Locate the SGW module, take out the 12PIN connector and 8PIN connector, and then connect these connectors with the bypass cable.
Here is an example on a 2018+ Jeep Grand Commander. For other models, check the SGM Location.
When connecting to STAR connector The STAR connector used for Security Gateway is always colored green, and has several connectors attached to them.
To connect the cable to a STAR connector, plug the pins into the connectors. The connecting pin locations may vary between different models, take the 2021 Dodge Challenger as an example
in this situation, we connect the read pin into the green wire and the black pin into the yellow wire.
Program process: Take a 2020 Jeep Wrangler with a smart key as an example. 1. Open the diagnosis app and go through this menu: Jeep- Proximity/Fobik (RFH)- Wrangler 18- Xtool X100 PAD 3 will ask to make sure the main cable and SGW bypass cable are connected. 2. Before programming, we suggest reading the key number that is registered on the car. Press the Number of Keys menu to check the key number
3. When key programming, the vehicle needs s security code to verify the process. Read the security code first. Make sure you are connected to the internet. Then click Read security code menu.
4. Read security code success
5. Press Add smart key to start key programming. Follow the instructions on the device, turn emergency indicators and switch the ignition off, *This menu is also applied to all keys lost situation.
6. Xtool will ask you for a security code. The device will automatically fill in the code.
7. Follow the instructions, put the key close to start button, then press and hold this button within 20 seconds until the device pops out the result, Press OK when you are ready for this process.
8. Programming success.
